Lets review the little bombshell I dropped on you before my life was taken over by garage sale details:
- In mid-April, we inquired about a sibling set on the waiting children list.
- After waiting a very long week, we received more information on these children.
- In late April, we told the agency we want to move forward with adopting these kiddos.
When you are matched with a kid(s), you are sent all the information the agency has on them. This is called a referral packet. We received this information while surrounded by some of our closest friends in the world. It was a very special, perfect moment.
In early May, we signed the papers included in the packet and returned it to our agency, along with a very large check.
And now we wait.
So what’s next?
Obviously we have some things to do around our house. I won’t bore you with the details, but our small townhouse has worked for the two of us for five years now. It’s going to take some work to get it ready for children.
We also need to get vaccines. Our children are in an orphanage that is 10 hours from the nearest big city; though with a population of about 100,000 it is considered the sixth largest city in the country. We will be traveling through some rural areas, which I am oddly excited about. But my arms are not.
The first time we travel to Ethiopia will be for court. Typically, this happens about 3 months after you accept the referral. If that proves true for us, we would be traveling in early August. If we are lucky, we will know our court date about a month before we have to travel. If we are not lucky, we could only get a few days notice. There are several things that could delay our court date; I’ll get to those another time. We’ll spend about a week in country for our first trip.
Then comes what I imagine will be the hardest part- we leave our kids in Ethiopia and come back to the U.S. for about six weeks.
Finally, we go to Ethiopia for the second time; this time for our visa appointment. Again, we could have pretty short notice for this trip. This trip will also be about a week and our kids will come home with us this time!
So there you have it. The next six months are going to be some of the most chaotic and fun months of our lives. And we can’t wait!
